Luna, a village with panoramic views of many water bodies, tall and old banyan trees, and river traversing aside, is situated in the Balianta block of Khordha district, having 100 numbers of households. Most of the people depend upon agriculture as their primary livelihood support. Her father’s income is 4000/- to 5000/- rupees per month, which he earns by selling the agricultural produce from 1.5 acre of land holding they have. Her mother is a homemaker. She has 2 brothers and 2 sisters. My sisters are studying at school. They live in a hut roofed house having 3 no of rooms. They have developed a kitchen garden at their backyard, where they cultivate cucumber, tomato. They have not yet received the LPG connections and her mother is still cook meal by firing fuel wood. She loved whatever her mother cooked for her, especially when she prepared her favorite dish fish curry. Sometimes I didn’t get full meals and also I show the pain on my parent’s eyes. We don’t using toilet we are going outside. We are using open well water for the drinking water purpose and we collected water from open well and its 2 km far from my home also we can collect water from their for home use like bathing, toilet purpose.Kiran has completed her B.A. and recently she is doing her distance course at under Utkal University. As I belong to a very poor family and our income is hand to mouth therefore I and my sisters and brothers face lot of difficulties in getting basic amenities like food, cloth and even education. I and my family went through many difficult situations in managing our house, Due to this problem I and my siblings were unable to study further. There was shortage of school books, dresses. But I managed everything I borrowed books from my friends and requested my teachers to provide me school dress and books. As I am good at studies therefore my teachers always helped me in my difficult situations. I always enjoyed going to school. It was not only the love for study, but the full meal (egg, rice and daal) that she got to eat there. During my HSC examination I was unable to pay the fees but in this difficult situation my friends and teachers helped me to deposit my examination fees finally, when I passed my HSC examination, tears rolled down her eyes, and these were surely the feeling of self-accomplishment and happiness. Kiran wanted to go for higher studies, but due to financial constraints her parents did not support her. But her strong zeal to study made her convince them, and finally, she got admitted into college being the eldest child brings ample amount of responsibilities. After completion of her 12th exam, she was compiled to do the household chores and take care of her siblings. When she saw her friends going to college, she felt depressed and helpless. She did not find any hope for her dreams to come true. Two years passed like this. One day she heard about the adolescent group that was formed in her village. After requesting her mother, she was allowed to attend the group meeting & become the member of the group. After finishing her regular house hold activity, she used to attend the adolescent girls group meeting every Saturday at 4.30 p.m. With passing day, she mixed well with all members of the group, and shared her feelings, her dreams of continuing her study. The members assured to support her. One of the group members took help of the PECUC field staff, whom they called as didi [that means elder sister]. She guided her through the process and adviced her to continue her study through distance mode from Utkal University. Not only this, the group members along with the PECUC staff went to Kiran’s house and convinced her parents to let her continue her studies. After repeated visit, her parents were convinced and allowed Kiran to fill-up the form for distance course. Kiran is now pursuing her graduation in distance mode. It was like a bird coming out from the cage. She shared her career dream of becoming a teacher and helping those kids are out of school. Kiran is now an active member of the adolescent group and has been a catalyst in convincing other girls to continue their education. She was thankful to the group friends & PECUC didi for helping her fulfill her dream.
